This speech community inquiry project required me to research my speech community and provide information about specific characteristics involving my community. I found I was most closely related to the 'southern' accent community because of growing up and having many family members in this community and my geographical location contributes as well. For this inquiry process, I was required to create a Wiki Readers Guide, which allowed me to research and create a deeper foundation of understanding on what a speech community is and my relations to it. During this project I also created a video, which captured proof of how my community interacts on a normal basis. I discovered new ideas and an understanding of where my community originated, how it originated, many stereotypes that come with it, and how I’m related to it. I believe the wiki readers guide was most helpful in my inquiry process because I was able to learn new interesting facts about my community, which allowed me to relate to it on a more personal level. I grew up on a farm in a small county and I learned geographical location contributes to what community you identify with. If I grew up in the north, odds are I would belong to a different speech community. I also learned that different characteristics could help identify certain communities and can identify if someone belongs to it or not. Certain speech characteristics are significant to my community and that is further demonstrated in my video. The wiki readers guide, my speech community essay, and my video allowed me to understand my community and my identity within it.
